The Green stone - Pounamu- Mystical Maori Shaped New Zealand Jade Pendants finished in sterling silver
There are two types of Jade namely jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is found in Northern china . Nephrite is found only in New Zealand. Nephrite jade is what the Maori term pounamu refers to.
Pounamu - The Green stone or New Zealand jade - occurs in two mineral forms, nephrite and bowenite. Both are formed deep in the earth where hot fluids cause a chemical reaction in zones where volcanic and sedimentary rocks come together. As the Southern Alps were formed over the last two million years, pounamu was lifted up to the earth’s surface through a process of heat and pressure. Pounamu continues to be carried into rivers and down to the sea by erosion.
Carved from a single stone, these green stones have deep meanings in maori tradition. Each one is hand picked by us from New Zealand this year and they are all lovely. There are spiral koru pendants, pointed infinity twists and some unique shapes too.
